MasterPieces | Anton Raphael Mengs, 1752-1755
What Kaélé presents in MasterPieces is not new. Anton Raphael Mengs, a painter and already an art theorist of the 18th century, sought to pay homage to Raphael, the Florentine master of the Renaissance, through his famous School of Athens, a painting that depicts the great figures—primarily philosophers—who inspired him. Mengs does not merely copy the original mural fresco; he transforms it into a rectangular painting and adds or removes certain figures of his choosing.

Proposal: Mengs’ School of Athens is reproduced and transformed into a square mosaic composed of the original works that have influenced the MasterPieces series. The final image is itself transformed into an endless animated loop.
